Rethinking energy on a territory scale

Overview: West Normandie has real assets enabling it to seize the opportunities of Energy Transition and to transform them into a major economic and social success. By 2030, the region will generate an excess of 10GW and 35TWh in electricity with the development of nuclear and tidal energy. Meanwhile, 19TWh of fossil fuel is still imported for transport and heating. Hydrogen becomes a solution as it can bridge between electricity, heat and gas networks.  About the Speaker: Full Name:   Thierry Ha Company/Organization:   Energy Hydro Data 2020 Address : France Phone :  + 33 695708266 Email Address:  thierry .ha@gmail.com

Going "low-tech" for a technically sustainable civilization?

Overview: The current development of technologies generally goes towards a more complex system. This requires more advanced technology to keep the system running (e.g. renewable energy in the grid requires smart grid). This trend makes our society more vulnerable (e.g. a problem on the electrical grid, paralyzes a modern society). To improve our society's resilience, going “low-tech” is an opportunity: simple technologies based on systems that can be built, used and maintained locally can be more reliable, accessible and improve people's autonomy. Analyzing this context and some examples, it appears developing "low-techs" can help towards a technically sustainable civilization.   About the Speaker: Full Name:   François   Veynandt Company/Organization:   Ecole des Mines d'Albi Carmaux Address : France Phone :  + 33632176416 Email Address:   francois.veynandt@gmail.com

Islanding a commercial district with PV and batteries

Overview: The NICE GRID project, a demonstrator of the French DSO ERDF, is testing islanding an a commercial district, i.e. the disconnection of a district form the main grid during 4 hours, and the supply with only batteries and PV generators. This will be done on a scheduled and unforeseen way. Presentation will decribe the islanding process and the works on site, as well as the laboratory tests About the Speaker: Full Name:   Thomas Drizard Company/Organization:   ERDF Address : France Phone:   + 33 663567230 Email Address:   thomas.drizard@gmail.com

Feasbility of injecting/converting the UK natural gas grid to hydrogen

Overview: The presentation will give an overview of research activities assessing whether the (UK) natural gas grid can be converted to carry either a hydrogen/natural gas mix, or pure hydrogen. The presentation will draw on a limited number of studies which have assessed the possibility of injecting hydrogen, and determined possible boundary levels. The assessment of converting the network completely to hydrogen refers to personal research undertaken at University College London. Possible challenges and benefits will be discussed briefly, and further areas for investigation will be highlighted. Mobility and Energy Demand

Overview:  Analysis of the potential of the passengers vehicles as a dispatchable, distributed energy storage resource to provide load shifting in a smart grid. The Vehicles represent both a demand for energy and a possible storage medium that could supply power to utilities.
