Empowering small scale farmers with appropriated renewable energy technology

Overview: A story on how to go beyond fair trade. Small scale accessible renewables enable people to locally valorize their production. Generating decentralized added value contributes to a fairer economy. Using the concentrating solar thermal roaster developed in the Catholic University of Peru (PUCP), the startup Compadre is an example of how this can happen. Small scale coffee farmers can roast themselves their coffee beans with solar energy. They sell directly to the consumer, which benefits from a “highly environmentally and socially friendly” product. The startup’s business model and experience are shared. Other similar opportunities are explored.
