Overview: The current development of technologies generally goes towards a more complex system. This requires more advanced technology to keep the system running (e.g. renewable energy in the grid requires smart grid). This trend makes our society more vulnerable (e.g. a problem on the electrical grid, paralyzes a modern society). To improve our society's resilience, going “low-tech” is an opportunity: simple technologies based on systems that can be built, used and maintained locally can be more reliable, accessible and improve people's autonomy. Analyzing this context and some examples, it appears developing "low-techs" can help towards a technically sustainable civilization.
